Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2014

Recommended Posts

http://www.marathonsingapore.com/

Slated to take place on 7 December 2014, registration will start on 16 July 2014. :yahoo:

Not much info at the moment but last heard that there's a high chance of the end point being at the new Sports Hub, the second event to do so after Sep's Straits Times Run. :turned:

Wonder if there are more new initiatives (or surprises) from this year's edition? :unknw:

My gut feel is the route may mirror part of the recent SunDown Full Marathon route, specifically the Sheares Bridge part. :turned:

The only difference is Sheares Bridge will be in the early (than latter) stages of the route, which will lead to the new Sports Hub naturally.

that may be possible.... but this is still our thoughts... cause being an IAAF race... they course had been measured and certified by IAAF.... if the route is changed, that would mean that SCMs have to get the IAAF down again.. would they do that?? i dun think so... maintaining the IAAF race course is still their ultimate aim.....

Well, if I remember correctly when the Garden By the Bay was opened, they changed the route in 2012. So I think they will. Dun forget that SCMS is owned by Sports Singapore (fka Singapore Sports Council). And the Sports Hub is the crowning glory of Singapore sports so I will be shocked if the SCMS route for 2014 does not include the new Sports Hub in some form. I dun think getting the IAAF down to recertify the route is too much of a cost; compared to the profile generated from highlighting the new Sports Hub. Dun forget that a gold label IAAF race need to be broadcast to a min number of 5 countries overseas. So it will make sense. Let's wait for more details.

I distinctly remember the organizers hinted last year that this year may end at sports hub. I hope so too.

I predict in the near future, many race will start at sport hub and end there. After all it a venue for sport and we don't have to lower our voice as to wake up the surrounding people in the hotel.

That's sure to happen. Unless Sports Singapore too greedy charge exorbitant fee for premise rental. Or it should be just like Marina Barrage where races are held there regularly.

The big issue I can forsee is parking. As it is when races are held around the Nicholl Highway, National Stadium, Tanjong Rhu area, many of the roads leading to the car parks will be closed. So even though there are plenty of parking lots available around the sports hub, if the roads are closed, then parking will be an issue.

for charges...who knows...... they may need to revamp the entire grass patches after a race... wahahhah......

parking wil lalways be an issue in all races... but i am sure there's always a way out....

Sadly a IAAF labelled race does not necessary equate to a run that provides a great running experience. More for marketing to sponsors and rationale to increase registration fees.

I truly agree.....it will be a great race for the elites.... they will be treated very differently and with lots of video/ camera time when they try to chase behind the vehicle with a timing in front of them.... while for the rest of us, it will just be another run, with high fees due to the accreditation but..... may not be able to justify for it....

but i do know of some of the races where praises were only heard off.......

The only good thing is the distance measured will be accurate or else world record will not be count. We can use GPS watch to measure but at the end it is their distance that we shall trust.

Usually there will be a launch event at Raffles Place. They may announce some key highlights of the race during the launch. Should be by July I guess.

Agree with Beast on the IAAF label that it doesn't mean a race with good running experience. I used to do SCMS in 2007 and 2008 but stopped doing it due to the heavy crowd congestion and the ever increasing race fees.

I was looking for a few sample gold label IAAF race and found Xiamen International Marathon (http://www.xmim.org/en/about_xmim.asp).

It is amazing that they can keep the full marathon race fees low for even overseas runner (USD 30 about SGD37+) and Chinese locals paying 80RMB (about SGD 16+) for a full marathon  Please tell me if you can find any sg running races with a full marathon priced lower than this (of course we will incur more expenses than just the race fees lah)

Back to the topic, I think Sports Hub will be a very overused location by then. Remember Marina Barrage? ^_^

    • Ok - so am old lah 😛 - been  on this forum for far too long...
    • Saga 1: The SA's internal carding system - which allocates athletes up to $1,200 per month based on various criteria - had expired month without the necessary follow-up. (info: https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/officials-say-track-body-must-sort-out-disputes)   Saga 2: Against paying Singapore Athletics share of award money  (info: https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/soh-against-paying-sa-share-of-award)   Summary: Soh (did not take part), Michelle Sng (did not win a Gold Medal), and Shanti Veronica Pereira ( Collected 2 Bronzes), the 2 Sagas will not affect Shanti Veronica Pereira because she can stay on with the $1,200 monthly allowance, happily with her Coach, and she gets her 2-Bronze Award for her Performance (and surely gladly give 20% to SA). SA will be delighted with the 2-year Excellence Peak Performance Program till 2021. The greatest loser in the Sagas is Soh because he will not have both - $1,200 monthly allowance, and already based on his PB, he could have collect a Gold Medal from 2019 SEA Games with an Award of $10,000. Even if he will be unwilling to share with the 20% to SA. SA only loss "$2,000" but save $1,200 monthly allowance for Soh for the next 2 years (savings of $28,800). SA -+$28,600 vs Soh -$10,000 - $28,800 (2020-2021) As for Michelle, she already said she wants to retire in 2017, but the surprise Gold Medal on that year makes her a defending Champion. Pain, Injury and Tears - for every jump. Plus she has reached beyond 30, and to be family-focused should be her entitlement in life. High Jump has given her a sporting life and to announce her honourable retirement from the call of Nation. It will be expected. SA - which has been controversial from the core. Change the whole SA? How many times have SA changed? Life as Usual. No change is better then to Change. Whatever. Marathon has been a Gold Medal for SEA Games. We will surely make a comeback. Without SA, marathoning is the only key spark in Athletics that even without $1,200 monthly allowance, Mok and Soh can be regional champions. So you know what Mok's Saga with SA, "Uncle, you say lah, the $1,200 monthly allowance, don't have money how to go overseas for marathon qualification mark closer to SEA Games, use personal paylah!" Now, everyone knows what is SAga is about right? "Money Not Enough, how to run overseas Marathon races." "What I win, is all Mine not yours, SA."  "SA :  gain $28,600 vs Soh minus $10,000 minus $28,800 (2020-2021)" "Ashley Liew demands S$120,000 in damages from teammate Soh over ‘false’ claims about sportsmanship act still outstanding."   Uncle wishes Soh Gets Lots of Money for the year of the Metal Rat (2020).
    • The shorter answer may be there are many IAAF races but only 7 WMM (at the moment). So its a combination of scarcity and prestige.  And one more thing. STPB no more P liao. STPB was established in 1964. Nowadays it just STB (since 1997!)
    • Why WMM over IAAF? Think you'll find that is down to how WMM markets and promotes those cities that are in this exclusive club. Especially with medal chasers. Look at who is in this exclusive club....2 major financial hubs, and with Brexit - perhaps Berlin is set to be a financial hub. Assume being part of the WMM will also come with a fee. So between IAAF and WMM, the STPB would find WMM more attractive and this would give Singapore special recognition in their want to progress with greater sporting achievements. Joseph Schooling's Olympic win, allows more to dream big.
    • Uncle salutes to Michelle Sng for her best effort for the Nation with this interview of her painful and also exiting moments when she took up High Jump for Woman because of her passion of "why not?" (info: https://mothership.sg/2018/01/michelle-sng/) A prodigy (she says she is not), a performance High Jumper (she says is unexpected), "no pain no gain" and with tears - she had to go through as her journey - making a come-back, an unwilling Champion (humbly just do my best), and she did it for the Nation because there was no representative for the sports she loved and she has passion about it because she participated as a school-girl - just for the sure fun of it. Thank you, Michelle. You are always the most inspired High Jumper (Gold) and aptly the high jump mama...a respect and inspiration for all here. We wish you the best in everything your heart desire.  What's next - SA: a SA-ga-ble NSA.
