Haze Season 2013

Recommended Posts

The haze season is back with a vengeance. :thumbsd:

Here's NEA's health advisory based on PSI value:

PSI-advisory_zps57133571.jpg

According to CNA, the PSI is hitting levels not seen since 2006.

So I'm wondering if any of the seasoned runners has any advise for some of us newbie runners. Based on the above, for PSI <200, it seems that maybe for some people (those who are not asthmatic or suffering other respiratory conditions), some running can continue to take place.

I'm wondering what will happen to races if the PSI continued to remain above 150. Has there being any races in the past years that were cancelled during to haze season?

Seasoned runners, come and share your stories! :geek:

I would think that anything above 100 and races could be cancelled. Running is considered strenuous physical activity. Anyway, better be safe than sorry. Running is for health. It would be ironic if we still run and jeopardize our health. We can always do it in gyms or do more strengthens exercises indoor. As for me, I'll be lazy and just chill. Haha.

"Jun 20th, 2009 flashback:

Severe haze may hit S'pore, El Nino set to return this year, bringing hotter and drier weather

SMOKE haze from Indonesia could make an unwanted comeback this year as an El Nino weather phenomenon develops, bringing hotter and drier weather, Minister for the Environment & Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said yesterday.

Though slight now, the haze could worsen in the coming months, and peak in September, deep into the dry season.

Yesterday, 32 hot spots were detected in Sumatra, and 50 in Borneo. Meteorologists are watching as an early-stage El Nino develops over the Pacific Ocean.

In fact, all it would take now for haze to blow by is for the wind to change, said experts. It has already blanketed parts of neighbouring Malaysia.

The pollution standards index (PSI) peaked at an unhealthy 136 in areas such as Port Klang, Shah Alam and Cheras last week, as visibility and air quality deteriorated rapidly.

In Singapore the PSI is in the good range for now. But similar hot and dry weather in 1997 and 2006 fuelled fires in Indonesia, and south-westerly winds sent the smoke onwards.

The haze lasted three months in 1997, with the PSI reaching an all time high of 226 in September. People stayed indoors, health-care costs soared and tourism was disrupted."

wonderfulblevic.. yes, races will be cancelled.. in races..nike goddess run 2011..specific in weather..in the event of haze.. and expect current races and upcoming races to put up..weather..in Q&A.. fortunately, none of known races had been cancelled due to haze.. for once the torrential rain pours..the PSI drops like crazy..

wonder why.. haze takes longer to clear.. these fires once started, is very difficult to extinguish, because some of the forest have peat underground, which when once ignited is very difficult to put out..so need to dampened the ground with much water..yes, torrential rainfall..yes..seeding of clouds to create artificial rainfall..expensive..

so as runners.. especially endurance.. oxygen is key to aerobic endurance.. and lungs must be moist to keep fresh oxygen pump into body.. and now..weather worsen with haze..which is soot and dirt.. high humidity (dry)..muggy (sweat trap on body, cannot evaporate)..and now oxygen-deprived..coupled with breathing of toxic air (due to burning of soot, polluted).. the best advice is..abstain outdoor training.. and can spend more time indoor..yes, gym workout..even though is not ideal to train in air-conditioned..body temperature will not be hot enough to fulfill enough heart rate to hit the essential work out zones of 1,2 (anaerobic)..and even 3 (aerobic).. but, why not do circuits training.. fast fast one.. helps.. like this..less that 8-min per set..and repeat till 20min or longer for enough heart rate to hit essential zone for aerobic fat burning.. yes, haze season also makes one "eats" more..and so.. must do exercise to "lose" some..and keep fit..

12well_physed-tmagArticle.jpg

yes, uncle has suspended all endurance training until haze conditions improve.. and uncle got gym workout, and indoor pool..as long as PSI remains above 100.. not healthy, comply.. and 50+.. short, slow and easy.. it's not worthwhile to train outdoor with haze.. just be patient..let nature takes cares and heals herself..and meantime.. stretches, strengthening and conditioning..and yes, for those need that healing of overuse injury..Stop, Rest and Recovery..

surely, races in late june like Mizuno PAssion Mount Faber Run 2013, Sunday, 23 June 2013, shall be the acid test of will this one be cancelled if the haze worsens?..let's hope for heavy rainfall..and let the nature decides.. and uncle wishes..all stay healthy-safe, and continue fitness exercises..more indoor.. during the haze period.. almost all outdoor activities..come to a temporary stoppage.. even the birds are singing less..and the greenery..will start to show brownish..dry and charred..and ignition of forest fires..shall be the evidence of the after-effects..of the haze season.

take care, all.

I grabbed this off a Facebook post. I'm not sure if this is the stand taken by race organiser.

PSI-advisory-02_zps3c119d35.jpg

This morning I woke up at saw the PSI was around 106 at 7am and decided to go for an easy run. I have to admit that this is virgin territory for me as I never attempt any physical activities previously during haze season (as I was not physically active ~lol`)

All in, it really wasn't too bad. One of the thing I wisely did was to bring hydration along even though I was only going for an easy 45 min run. I think it makes a difference cos I feel my throat drying up much more than usual. So the fluid definitely helps.

I also noticed that the haze has not deterred people from outdoor activities. There appeared to be fewer people but not all physical activities has ceased. So IMHO, I think each individual must decide for himself and gauge his comfort level. If the haze makes you feel uncomfortable, then by all means, stay indoors and worked out in the gym or something. But for those brave enough to venture outside, be sensible and take your workout a notch or two down.

Take care all!

our neighbour just replied.. and explained..

936419_539207442804470_602534663_n.png

to add to lonewolf's concerns to all.. asthmatic ones... elderly and children.. and even every healthy ones.. no outdoor until further notice.. as uncle has explained.. good lungs need moisture to bathe oxygen to capillaries, blood needs oxygen to go to legs, muscles with oxygen burn fuel for run.. but, air is polluted, so oxygen-deficiency..humidity is high and dry.. aided by southwesterly wind..so lungs breathing is shallow and dry.. so drink more more water, throat dry dry, lungs complain not enough moisture.. and no need isotonic drink for this normal hydration.. since you all no run aerobic distance ones.. but eat fruits more more.. immune system breaks down due to dirt and soot don't know got what else germs or flu-like thingy floating in the air..uncle shared.. while watching at a haze-filled park from window of yesterday evening.. mum played with girl girl and little bro boy boy.. and suddenly.. mum shocked.. little bro boy boy for no reason.. vomit..vomit and more vomit.. stunned mum..who no know, young mum, can understand.. got haze still want to bring little boy boy and girl girl go play play.. for young children have small lungs..and not enough oxygen goes to brain..giddiness and can faint one..plus..nowadays food all eat outside one.. got check for freshness or not?..or food got wash properly one or not?.. so..don't play play..even uncle no anyhow play play outdoor and talk run anymore.. uncle is concerned..better stay indoor..like many..who abstain outdoor exercise..all do indoor..so simple..

and to swtmt, uncle's tiong bahru urban challenge run..and green corridor run bro.. always give updates and good info. some more with pics.. mt faber run is an elevated run.. meaning.. as run get higher in elevation.. oxygen level gets depleted with every height of 10m = 3-storey .. and..meaning.. warning for those with asthmatic, weak heart, and definitely school children category shall be a definitely a NO.. but for adults.. as long as psi remains 100 and above.. figure out the response from the organiser.. who is a PA-event some more.. but, uncle hopes..unless a torrential rain of at least 2-day non-stop come soon..and let good mother nature rest with 1-day.. bath in bright and sunny with fresh oxygen release from the greens (but greens are dying and brownish each day, how to make oxygen plentiful so fast?)..on saturday..hope mizuno mount faber run 2013 is spared from haze..and let the race..proceed..and make swtmt.. have a good race..and talking about that.. can consider salomon tiong bahru urban 2013.. early september.. haze season should be gone..interested?

hope everyone is healthy and fine so far... <dry cough>,<dry cough>.. uncle throat dry dry.. please be excused...drink water..

PSI reading as per 4pm is 85!! dropping dropping dropping....

Guess this evening will be a good chance for a run incase it returns for the remaining of the week

Can also take this opportunity to gauge how body will react to the haze condition.

For those running at night, would advise to have some form of blinking lights or wear bright or light colour clothes. itss dark enuf already at night, with the haze, runners may not be as visible to cyclist or vehicles as compared to clear nights.

Run safe and listen to your body!

Agree with EggFace on the overall PSI level falling to moderate level. It is still best to exercise caution until the haze situation is under control.

FKohpapa has offered good advice on alternative workouts/exercises even though we will rather go out for training runs instead.

I thought PSI 170+ was bad enough.

But seems it might break the record of 200+ in the 1990s.

Every other day it is reaching a new High.

Those running take care.

Thanks kohpapa for the heads up on the 300+ PSI

Yes, do slow down and stay indoors. 290 is unhealthy air pollution.

If must run, go indoor gym.

goodie fine hazy day to all.. lunch coming..hungry.. the day-after.. the PSI.. reaches.. 321..

everyone talking.. about..this..there are 2 PSI readings from NEA website... PM10 is for hourly updates of 3hrs reading and PM2.5 is for 24hr reading..so what does it mean?

Fine particles (PM2.5). Particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter are called "fine" particles. These particles are so small they can be detected only with an electron microscope. Sources of fine particles include all types of combustion, including motor vehicles, power plants, residential wood burning, forest fires, agricultural burning, and some industrial processes.

Coarse dust particles. Particles between 2.5 and 10 micrometers in diameter are referred to as "coarse." Sources of coarse particles include crushing or grinding operations, and dust stirred up by vehicles traveling on roads.

so..PSI 321.. based on 2.5 or 10 micrometers one?..meaning PM10 is for hourly updates of 3hrs reading and PM2.5 is for 24hr reading..so what does it mean?.. uncle very blur blur.. anything hazy..means number smaller the better..as long as PSI is 50+ and below.. uncle can go outdoor run very happy... loh..

some interesting views...city/bay aera..always recent road runs..

before..

fMQpNmr.jpg..

after..

5k7AAPg.jpg

uncle.. now..MC..3-day...actually got from uncle's family doc, kohdoc..who treated uncle as nephew with special family promo code..just key-in "HAZEPSI321" online..FREE cert of completion with recovery with no need to run, Rest and Drink more water..some more with finishing tee and medal..in the future date..to be issued on 30th feb, any year..uncle just wait..and guess by who is the sponsor?.. before..HiVelocity.. after yesterday..HellVelocity.

watery-eyes hard to open..cough..hard to smile..cough. . >.<... (⊙_⊙) ... ... (ಠ_ಠ) ... ... (⊙_⊙) ... ... (ಠ_ಠ) ... ... (⊙_⊙)

Heard the hourly PSI update for 9pm yeaterday was the HIGHEST so far at 450+.

Our highest psi of 321 was actuallly for the 3 hour average.

PM10 is for hourly updates of 3hrs reading

Meaning much lower than the True highest.

Can anyone confirm if this is true or correct ?

Thanks In advance.
