2011 Boston Marathon

Recommended Posts

just back from work trip to Hong Kong, jumped on BAA website to register for next year (reg opened on the 18th, last year it took over two months to fill up) and i saw this:

marathonregistration_closed_text.jpg?mh=349&mw=940

very depressing after spending 6 months training for gcm to make my qualifier. oh well, there's always next year i suppose...

aiya acatal, quite unlucky there....somehow, this year's Boston registration is SO HOT!

I thought the qualifying time lasts for 2 years?

With the places fully sold out in 8 hours, it is possible that BAA will:

1) toughen the qualifying time for both male and female (no offense intended - but the reason why 26,000 spots are sold out in 8 hours effectively means that the running standard globally has improved and the current qualifying time became 'relatively soft for serious runners'

2) toughen the qualifying time for women (current BQ delta between male & female is 30mins while world-record delta is around 15mins)

3) lottery (not Tokyo-esque where everyone can enter the lottery, but more like New York where the faster runners are 'guaranteed' (if not wrong sub-3 for Mens Open category), and the rest go into ballot) :innocent:

Acatal - Try to improve your time and get a better starting corral for 2012 ! :icecream:

Previously you can use 2010 timing and book the spot for 2011. But if you can't do it, you are allowed to defer the slot for 2012. Starting this year, deferment is not allowed.

Acatal - I knew you BQed in GCM, but did you BQ in Sydney?

If I am not wrong, if your BQ race is late September onwards, the timing is valid to enter 2011 (of course, now closed) and 2012.

Sling,

if you have yet to exercise your BQ, you should do it quick....suspect this will be a super high-value 'finisher' cert/achievement soon.

Congrats to all of you including acatal, Sling, Raven, IMD for achieving your respective BQs in this lifetime....Cheers!

the qualifying for 2011 had to be after September 30, 2009. Assuming it is the same for 2012, this will make cut off date September 2010, Gold Coast was in July.

seriously instead of getting faster maybe i should just wait a couple of years til i am in an older (slower) category

Acatal - This sucks. Next time, you have to be faster to the website than you were to the finish line. 8 hours is insane man !!!

Sling - I think New york Marathon for men is guaranteed for 2:55 and below.

As an aside, I didnt apply for the Boston Marathon either for 2011. One of the contributing reasons is i probably am about 2 hours too slow! :) Hehehe. Nevertheless, since i dont have to pay any tax for dreaming, i want to may be BQ in 2013. That is 3 years to go sub 3:11.

maybe i will try again, maybe not, but i'm not sure it's worth planning so long in advance for something which is so uncertain.

many people who tried to register right after opening could not even complete registration due to the overload of traffic on the website.

Is anyone in this forum going for the 2011 Boston Marathon? My old man qualified & he'll be going there alone....so if anyone from here is going, perhaps he can hook up with you.

Thanks

Boston qualifier is crazy man. For a 3:10 qualifier means have to run an average pace of 4:30min/km. I can do this probably for 500m only haha. Too bad not endowed with running genes. I wonder how much is genes and how much is training. I remember the last SCMS I counted less than 20 locals that made the timing. Those who qualified for Boston, can share your running experience? your timings when you started, and as you progressed through the years. Your training regimes etc... just curious.

My old man will be 79 this year. He qualified in yr 2009 when he completed the Std Chart in 4hrs 39mins....put me to shame. Sigh.

So no one fr SgRunners is going? My old man will be going alone cos I can't make it. It'll be great if he can link up with some Singaporeans.
