I was doing a test by driving from Kallang to Yishun via the KPE tunnel. I guess the GPS cannot record the underground distance so is only 2.48 km. But I have doubts abt my avg driving speed of 5.27 km/h?

That's probably almost half of your distance is not picked up by GPS, and that will affect the average speed. GPS needs line of sight to work.

Noticed that you had used the wrong workout type for your drive track. Select Freestyle, and not Run, and the result should be more accurate, as I think the mode affects the way the GPS points are recorded.

Thanks for the input. Will try out different variation & compare results.

Location not being updated at high speeds

One of our users tried to use SportyPal to track a drive on the highway. Surprisingly, when he uploaded his workout (well, driving isn’t really a workout, but you know what we mean), he found that most of the coordinates had not been tracked by the application. The problem? He chose “Running” as his activity.

The SportyPal app filters erroneous GPS coordinates based on the speed and activity type. If it sees you running at 100 km/h, it’s going to assume that the data it’s getting is wrong, and the fast-moving coordinates will be ignored. Free style is your friend

To avoid this, always try to choose the correct activity type for your workout. If you’re not sure what’s closest to your planned activity, and especially if you’re planning on moving really fast (like highway-fast), choose “Free style”. You won’t get any information on calories this way, but you’ll be able to move fast without fear of losing your coordinates to the filter.

I used freestyle for my previous roadtrip in China and it recorded over 400km/hour!! Wow.

Also, for my run, i have had max speed of over 19km/h ... i doubt i can really do so.

My last workout shows around 11.5km ... but using mapmyrun, it is only around 9.3km ... so, i'm confused with the acccuracy now.

I have ran the "11.5km" again to see if the recorded distance is the same ... but somehow, the website is down ... with "runtime error".

What does "close to a Garmin" means? did you mean you measure the distance with Garmin software? Also, from my phone, i thought it was recording 12km ... so, is it showing 11.03km on sportypal? (sorry, i can't access and i don't know what is this timeout error about)

Ok, will post your error on the Sportypal support page for their advise. Below are the run details :-

Date: 18/06/2009 18:45

Distance: 11.21 km

Total Time: 01:05:13

Average Speed: 10.31 km/h

Calories Burnt: 662 cal

Date: 20/06/2009 10:58

Distance: 12.44 km

Total Time: 01:07:04

Average Speed: 11.13 km/h

Calories Burnt: 735 cal

Actually a couple of the runners this morning are using the Garmin405 and the distance recorded were about 10.67km.

Wrong password?

A few of our users have reported that they are unable to register their devices with the website. Their devices display an error message (usually that the password is wrong) and doesn’t let them upload any workouts, but at the same time you get a “thank you for registering” e-mail and they can access the site with the same account.

If you are experiencing this problem, it is probably due to your mobile device accessing the web through a proxy server. The SportyPal server receives the data from your device and sends an OK signal back to it, but when that signal goes through the proxy, it changes it so that the mobile devices thinks that the site rejected the user data.

We’re trying to work around this, but here’s what you can try in the meantime:

* Ensure that your device is actually connected when you’re trying to send. Test your connection, visit google.com or any website that you know is running at the moment to see if everything is OK with your connection.

* Are you using a GPRS connection to access the Internet? Try Wi-Fi or WLAN if your device supports it.

* Does your mobile network have a filter for undesirable content? If so, they may have blacklisted sportypal.com. Check to see if you can disable this filter and if this fixes the problem. Even better, tell your network provider that sportypal.com is not a harmful website!

* Can you disable the proxy altogether? If you do and you find that you still can’t register or upload workouts, then this is likely another problem completely.

Note that if you do manage to register by temporarily disabling your proxy, you can still upload workouts. The device will report that the upload failed, but check the website, and you’ll see that your workout has been uploaded.

UPDATE: As of today (9.6.2009) we have resolved this problem for some users, mostly with the help of Mike Bearne and Edo Donkers, two members of the SportyPal community who pretty much did everything that we asked of them to help us get to the bottom of this issue. So, if the above workarounds didn’t help, you may want to try registering and/or uploading again. We’re working on fixing this problem for everyone, and we’ll send you an update as soon as we have something.

We are still interested on hearing from you if you can’t register or upload workouts, so post your problem on http://www.sportypal.com/Support, and be sure to tell us what device you’re using and what network you’re on.

I think I'm able to upload from my phone if I can get a satellite signal .. you may check and see that I might uploaded a Sungei Tengah to Commonwealth Ave West on a bike yesterday.

Did all the other Garmin runners run the same routes? if so, my both recordings seem long(er) too. the margin of error may seem hugh.

Seems like problem has been resolved & able to log in again. Anyway made a comparison between mapmyrun & sportypal. Distance wise pretty much accurate http://www.sportypal.com/Workouts/Details/7894 & have since selected freestyle when I do my recce drive for the Republic Run.

Appreciate Sleek for the effort :Applause:

Just rode on my bike and (finally) able to get GPS signal prior starting. So, for once, I have ride data on my bike "computer" and Sportypal software.

Bike Distance = 42.92km (very close to what i measured with mapmyrun)

Sportypal Distance = 41km

Bike Max Speed = 42.1km/h

Sportypal Max Speed = 48.53km/h (this always seems to be questionable. i clocked max speed of 22.89km/h for my run today at high noon. wow!)

Polar Calories = 816 kCal

Mapmyrun = 1086 kCal

Sportypal = 923 kCal

I'm not comparing average speed as I stopped my bike meter at traffic lights while keeping my sportypal running.

Overall, this free software is great. I can now see where I struggled with my bike climb and where I hit top speed (along LCK ... though the number may be wrong)

Glad I didn't commit to buy Polar 800 or 300 with foot pod last week.

If only I can get GPS signal everytime i initiate the sportypal that would be great ... everytime i need to spend at least numerous tries and wait over 10 minutes before i can start. And mind you, I was out in the open with clear blue sky above my head. If SLEEK knows a better solution with this (last) problem, then I'm a total convert to this software. hehe.

GPS signal does depends on a lot of factor including the GPS module on your mobile, so nothing much can be done about that except to try the Sportypal apps on various mobiles. So far, I'm able to get a GPS locked within 5 mins at the longest when stationery. :Big Grin:
