    Virgin Money London Marathon 2018

Have fun and remember to BYOB so you can run through the check points. You will have perfect running weather. Londoners don't know what "hot" means!

London is trialling compostable cups at 3 aid stations so that any cups that escape into the river/environment at least has a chance of breaking down. Too many #Tossers throwing stuff on the floor and into the nearby bushes/gardens/river Would like to see events follow what France doing to deter Tossers.

It is the way that all races will go Events in the US/Europe starting to provide e-goodie bags. The UN is asking all nations to look at reducing the amount of plastic packaging. Watch Blue Planet to see how damaging it all is. Litter kills.

You also doing VLM? Train driver buddies have warned me Getting to the expo might be a problem as it is the DLR. However the underground sounds like it will be okay. So you can get to Canning Town via the Jubilee line. You can walk from Canning Town to the Excel centre (@1miles)

@gentle hope you really did keep your accommodation near the start line. There is a potential underground/train strike on Marathon Day!!! Here they like to hurt the economy to put across their point https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/dlr-strike-to-go-ahead-on-london-marathon-weekend-leaving-thousands-struggling-to-reach-the-start-a3806271.html

    Arrowhead 135

Failure is so easy when the odds become stacked against you. What do you do to take back the victory? Here is my account for the final part of the terrain from 112 to 135 miles and having stayed awake for over 60 hours https://tyrelady.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/arrowhead-4-4-psychotic-battles/ This is an excellent event and I would definitely do it again!

    Arrowhead 135

If any of you masochist are looking for an adventure and a hard time in a harsh environment, here is the start of my write up for Arrowhead 135: https://tyrelady.wordpress.com/2018/02/07/arrowhead-135-the-preamble/ Some background: It is a 135 mile event that has to be completed within a 60 hour limit You can run, bike or ski. Temperatures can go down to -50 degs C as it did in 2014 and bit my fingers. It is held at the end of January as this typically has the worst weather, starting at International Falls. This is a town on the US/Canadian border . It is also known as killer frost falls but not to put off visitors, it is also known as the Icebox of the Nation. The route is along a snowmobile trail. The first 10 miles is straight and boring and then becomes more interesting when it turns onto the Arrowhead Trail. It is very reasonably priced compared to other snow and ice ultras at $200 USD. You are expected to carry all your own survival gear and there are only 3 checkpoints along the entire route. The right gear is important for your own safety. The official website is here: http://www.arrowheadultra.com/

    Arrowhead 135

What is tiredness? A sleepy head? Illogical decisions? Memory loss? Apathy? Here is my account of the 40 miles of terrain from checkpoint 2 to checkpoint 3 for 32-50 hours of race time and over 53 hours of sleep deprivation. https://tyrelady.wordpress.com/2018/02/23/the-hare-the-tortoise-and-the-moon/

Things could have been a lot worst if I had not experienced frostbite in 2014. Response and timing is key to ensure the self infliction does not result in a long uncertain period (about 10-12 weeks healing period) of whether you will keep a limb or not. This is part 2 of dealing with people and the deadly cold over 72 miles https://tyrelady.wordpress.com/2018/02/15/arrowhead-135-the-taming-of-the-dragon/

King of the Trails - 11 Mar, 18 Aug, 22 Sep, 25 Nov

Many trail events in other countries are going cupless for exactly the reason @beast indicates. Too many blur runners who throw rubbish into the long grass/forest areas. Plus they will DQ runners that are found littering. So excellent that any Sg events that are even partially on trail go cupless.

One little lady can't do a lot but a whole bunch of Green Ambassadors can make a noise Also noted that the rules state: Lagi - can also report your fellow competitor for littering...after all it is a series and all should abide by the same rules. The challenge is on for all outdoor events to be clean and green.

Yah - happy to help......FYI - if staying in London for a little while then think about purchasing an Oyster Card (it's like the SMRT card). It will provide a small discount on the cost of travel on trains/underground and buses within the London area (up to zone 6) Suggest you think about staying on for at least a week or 2 after the marathon. So many great places 1. Stratford Upon Avon (where LKY and wifey hung out) - Cambridge/Oxford 2. Stone henge / go on a King Arthur trail / want a bit more excitement go pot holing 3. Lake District / North Wales - Snowdon (go camp out) - Crib Goch is a fantastic knife edge ridge 4. Scotland - Edinburgh / Fort William / Glen Coe (look for the "lost valley") .....so many more places....

I know there have been some operational issues in Sg but no way as bad as UK. Here are some of the common delays by the overland trains: - Strike (there's always a strike over pay every year by one of the unions - rail guards, drivers, platform staff....) - Suicide (perhaps happens every other year near the London area) - Leaves on the track - can cause slippage - No rail guard / no driver (for some reason they were late) - Wrong snow (London rarely has a lot of snow) - which can clog up the engine - Signalling issues (get that frequently) Am always thankful when I can get from A to B in a timely manner. Yes SMRT is way more reliable than UK underground/overground. UK trains are all privately owned! So probably why it can be unreliable.

Before you do that - consider the time it will take you to get to the event. Assume your friend will stay someone near Green Park and you will need to go to Greenwich - then estimate about 1/2 hr train journey + 20 minute walk to find your pen. Also have a back up plan if the train system for what ever stupid reason decides to have a strike or someone jumps under the train. Uber will be very slow due to road closures. Sg SMRT is way more reliable than the UK. Here is a link to the underground map http://content.tfl.gov.uk/standard-tube-map.pdf

Then I work on London Marathon. Cos it is really bad. Generally older runners (40 +) in London area also say there are cleaners. When you are at the back, the bottles are worst than the cups for tripping up on. Generally found the late 20s - 30s seem to be more dilligent here. Same as in Singapore.

p.s. Have been using AirBnB as well and found that pretty good
  24. @kohpapa - Yes - completing a FM, HM, 10km for the first time is fantastic. Everyone should be applauded a bit for rising to the challenge. Taking responsibility for your actions is a full applaud. Singapore and the USA are not the same. They have a president who was born into wealth and does not care about the environment nor diplomacy. He has reverted many environmental laws in the USA. His only vision is to improve the monetary situation for the USA.... I compare Singapore with Taiwan & Japan, runners when they are tired, will still make the concious effort to dispose of their trash responsibly. Even when running at a good pace will divert over to the bins to dispose of their trash. It is a matter of creating habits. The organisers provided recycle bins which were placed by the side of the general trash. We have had recycle bins for years. So are you saying thinking runners need a baby sitter to show them how to put the correct trash in the bin.....to even put trash in the bin because ....they are "too tired"? It is part of everyone's interest and moral responsibility to be green and solutions can only work with a collaborative effort. I also know there are hundreds of responsible runners who agree and are raising their game and the numbers are increasing. Many runners will do it because they care....and the "old ways of irresponsibility" will die.
  25. I do marathons and ultras and cannot excuse the poor behaviour of my fellow runners anywhere in the world who have enough energy to walk, eat, talk, go to toilet and clean themselves after. It is about a conscious effort. We have one landfill which is filling up much faster than has been expanded for. When that is full, the disposal of our trash will have to become much more expensive if we continue to be too lazy to bother or care. The cleaners clear the rubbish and some uncles do go through whatever trash they can go through to take the cans (as can sell back to veolia), but too much is being incinerated and sent to Semaku that could be reused/repurposed. As a developed country with highly educated people, we need to be responsible and not pass the buck with poor excuses, otherwise we are fooling ourselves as we become more disconnected from the world that supports our living. Really grateful that you collected some of the wet towels at the end. My Trash Directors were shocked when people were throwing them into the bins and treating them as disposable. But we did not have the man power to do something about that. Would you be able to share the charity that accepts the towels as donations? Otherwise we will look at collecting them the next time to send to the animal shelters. Thank you for your effort to retrieve those towels and do think about becoming one of our Green Ambassadors to change the attitude towards the disposal of trash
